ENACTUS YOUTH FEST: STUDENTS GIVING BACK TO SOCIETY
One of the world’s renowned organizations working
towards the betterment of the society –is ENACTUS, an acronym for
Entrepreneurial Action Us. Its mission statement is: “We are a student driven
organization seeking opportunities to provide our global community with the
tools to enhance lives, by learning, practising and teaching the principles of
free enterprise.” The ENACTUS branch at GITAM Institute of Management has a
bunch of talented, energetic, creative and truly socially committed students
guided by the faculty advisor Dr. K. Manjusree Naidu and the Dean and Principal
Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna. ENACTUS – GIM is into teaching remote rural
communities the skills they require to enter markets and thereby selling
products in exchange for money. Most important, after the destructive cyclone
Hudhud, students got together to bring relief materials and to create
entrepreneurial opportunities in impoverished tribal villages. In the year
2014-15 ENACTUS GIM has been actively involved in helping the villagers of
Somalingapalem , a tiny hamlet in the Eastern ghats, in Visakhapatnam district
of Andhra Pradesh. Students of MBA came together to provide a millet grinding
machine to the rural women and taught them to grind and sell ragi flour in the
nearby markets. Another project to train villagers in making and selling lac
toys is underway. In the same village they also trained a group of women not
only by giving them sewing machines, but also by teaching and issuing
certificates in tailoring.
Continuing a
famous tradition, on the 12th of September, 2015, to sustain the
activities of the organization, student members of ENACTUS - GIM conducted a
one day mega fund raiser event with both competitions and a cultural night with
some of the best in class bands, dances, songs and skits that enthralled the
audience. The chief guests for the fest were: Dr.Mallikharjun Nagineni ,Vice
President-Human Relations Mylan Laboratories and Mrs Vani Gannamani ,Director
,Phoenix IT solutions, Visakhapatnam. All the proceeds of the ticket sales will
go to the ENACTUS funds to aid the needy. The theme on which the fest was
conducted was HOPE – in the backdrop of the reconstruction activities and
spirit of determination post cyclone Hudhud, and for this, a miniature mascot –
a snowman was created by the creativity department which was a big success on
the D Day.
