GITAM Institute of Management is organizing OBT (Outbound Training) Program – GURUKOOL for all the new students of its various postgraduate and undergraduate programmes from 20th July to 26th August, 2016. Each batch accompanied by a faculty member, under the guidance of experienced trainers from Maven Training Consultants, is to undergo a three and a half day training program at a venue around 30 kms from Vizag, provided with basic amenities and a secure environment. The program was formally inaugurated by Mrs. Shubra Sharma, Head (HR) HSBC, Visakhapatnam, in the presence of Prof. P. Sheela, Principal, GITAM Institute of Management. The first batch of students from MBA first year accompanied by the trainers and the faculty was flagged off by Mrs. Shubra Sharma on 20th July 2016 at 4 p.m.
GITAM Institute of Management is a pioneer in introducing Outbound Training for the students of Management and has been successfully conducting OBT for the last seven years. Outbound Training is an established corporate training tool in Western countries and has gained popularity in India as well. Based on the philosophy of Dr. Kunt Hahn, OBT is all about providing opportunities for self-discovery, personality development and social skills through outdoor exposure.

The innovative experiential learning program is based on the ancient Indian Gurukul system where princes would be trained to become kings through real life learning. This training equips students with basic skills to become successful management professionals. It inculcates true leadership skills with a human touch and enables the students to rejuvenate in a stress-free atmosphere away from the mundane world. They learn not only to face new challenges in difficult circumstances but also to effectively work with people. It leads to synchronization of mind, body and soul and enables them to develop fitness, self-reliance, interpersonal skills and bonding though the new challenges in a new adventure-setting with a new group. A “once-in-a-lifetime” experience, OBT is aimed at helping students discover their own inner selves and their goals in life. It is hoped that, this time too, as in the past, students would benefit greatly from the experience and emerge as individuals transformed for the better.

On 26th July, 2016, a session on “SCOPE & OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS” was conducted by Ms Vanitha Datla, Deputy Chairwoman, IWN Southern Region & Vice Chairperson, ELICO LTD at Mother Teresa Auditorium, GITAM University, Visakhapatnam.  The welcome address was delivered by Prof. P. Sheela, Principal, GITAM Institute of Management.  Ms. Datla in her highly enriching session spoke of the rise of women entrepreneurs in India and the world. She also spoke of the qualities necessary for women to make a mark in the corporate world and to establish themselves in the field of entrepreneurship. From her rich experience, she presented inspiring examples of  several women entrepreneurs.

Ms. Datla compared the GDP of the India and the U.S. and opined that India too could have a high GDP like the U.S. if the economic potential of the female population was fully utilised.  She quoted a survey in 1999 by IIT graduates which found that only 6% of women in India are working. 48% of the Indian population is female and has a responsibility to contribute to the GDP. Women’s contribution, she felt would lead to positive social impact, greatly foster overall economic growth and reduce poverty . She opined that women make better entrepreneurs because they are good at multi-tasking, excel in building relationships and are superior in emotional intelligence. Calling for a greater representation for women in all areas, she emphasized that if Indian women contributed 10% more to the GDP, then India’s GDP could easily be 8%. She gave six tips or six ups to the students about leadership –SHOW UP, SPEAK UP, LOOK UP, TEAM UP, DON’T GIVE UP and LIFT OTHERS UP. She ended by saying, "Leadership isn't something you just do, it's something you become."
