The_Perils_of_Indifference
“The perils of indifference” was a speech given by Elie Wiesel, a NOBEL peace prize winner at the White House Millenium Evening, 1999, commemorating the onset of the new millennium. It was my first day at GITAM and I stumbled upon this speech at the KRC and the thoughts which lingered on I wanted to share.
Elie Wiesel was a holocaust survivor at the Jewish concentration camps in Nazi Germany, was separated from his mother and sister, and lost his father to malnutrition and exposure in those. Later he founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation and always spoke against the oppression around the world, including the soviet Jews, the ‘disappeared’ in Argentina, refugees in Cambodia, the Kurds, native Indians in Nicaragua and famine victims. He wrote books such as La Nuit, L’ Aube(Dawn), Le Jour(The Accident), and many more drawing from his own life and experience as a victim. Elie Wiesel passed away this year on July 2nd.
When you ask what is indifference, Siri or Google say it is a lack of interest, concern or sympathy. Is everything understood in that small sentence, or is there more to it? Do we really know how much indifference affects people around us? Elie Wiesel says,” the opposite of Love is Indifference and not Hate”.
Indifference is always tempting, as we would want nothing to do with things with which we are not affected. We always have our own goals and works to do. There could be a bomb killing tens of people, or a flood destroying hundreds of lives or even a community wiped away for ‘developmental’ projects. But no, we want nothing of that. Thinking we could never take the place of the ‘victim’, is betraying our own self. We see suffering in the news, on the roads even, and forget they are people just like us with families like we have.
Wiesel said “Anger and hatred even are a virtue, as they elicit a response. But indifference is always a friend of the oppressor”. He spoke about children, and how it broke hearts to see them suffer on the television, and I could only wonder, has anything changed today? How many children are we seeing, suffering in wars in the Middle East, bodies from upturned boats in Europe, trafficking all over the world, natural calamities, and what do we do about them?
I always thought, what CAN we do about them? Going around fighting all of these is definitely not pragmatic. But that day, I found an answer. If God has given us one voice to speak, technology today has given us numerous voices. When people are hurt, we should let them know we are with them. When we see suffering and we write a beautiful piece, or a symphony, many more will come and stand with us.
It isn’t true that none of us do anything. People react and BRAVO to them. But if we aren’t reacting, we should. We must be holding hands against the oppression around us. When the whole world, ‘our world’, crumbles around us, don’t we want a hand on our shoulder, and a voice saying ‘’ We are with you”.
Being indifferent in this day and age is much more easy, and fashionable even, to say, “I have got nothing to do with people”. But let’s not forget we are all together as part of humanity. Ignoring the human in us is what makes us inhuman.
P.S. The speech by Elie Wiesel is in “Speeches that changed the world”, by Simon Sebag Montefiere, and is a wonderful read.

Are you bored?
The immense pleasure you get when you realise you have
nothing to do
To the stage of cognizance where you really have
nothing to do..
It’s a journey of a full circle, filled with petite
realizations.
You will be preoccupied for that second, but don’t take
that moment for granted,
‘Cause you never know when work will leave your side.
Once again you will become a solitary reaper, Left to
your own imagination.
The mind shifts from one scenario to another,
Few are clear sailing, few not so..
The idea of becoming a winner to the idea of being
called by the devil...
This is what boredom does to you..
The most mundane consequences become intriguing...
And the most intriguing become prosaic..
Are you still bored??

ALGO_TRADING
Trading and
investing has become the norm for individual investors and traders as an
alternative investment apart from gold and land, since late 1990s as brokers
offer their services via a wide variety of online trading platforms.Trading is
nothing but an activity of buying and selling securities on stock exchanges.
Trading in securities can be done on long term basis referred usually as
delivery trading and a very short term trading which is usually within a day,
referred normally as Intraday-trading. A trading strategyisa plan designed to achieve a profitable return
by taking eitherlong or shortpositions in the stock market. The online trading
strategy through BSE and NBSE clicked mainly due to its verifiability,
quantify-ability, consistency, and objectivity which come with a package of
immense research that highlights its effective and efficient use of
infrastructure to bring in better returns for the investments made in stock
markets for investors.
As many of us
are aware, trading is done either by Individuals as ‘self’ or through broker
agents or by equity advisors of a broking firm. Similar in these lines we have
another type of trading called Bulk trading or block-trading or black-box
trading that is often done only by some of the broking firms especially in US,
UK and European countries. Usually this type of trading is also referred to as
High-frequency trading (HFT) especially in India which deals with trading done
in huge quantities or at a large scale. The high-frequency trading strategy was
first initiated by a company called Renaissance Technologies, USA. The other
major high-frequency trading firms in USA include Chicago Trading, Virtu
Financial, Timber Hill, ATD, GETCO, Tradebot and Citadel LLC.
Investopedia
defines HFT as “High-frequency trading is a program trading platform that
uses powerful computers to transact a large number of orders at very fast
speeds using complex algorithms
to analyze multiple markets and execute orders based on market conditions.
Typically, the traders with the fastest execution speeds will be more profitable than traders with
slower execution speeds”. Computerized trading is used primarily by institutional investors
typically for large-volume trades. Orders from the trader's computer are
entered directly into the market's computer system and executed automatically.
This type of trading involves
trading strategies based on algorithms or complex mathematical formulae, which
is carried out by computers to move in and out of heavy or large positions in
seconds or fractions of a second. The algorithms are closely guarded and
executed by their owners (broking firms) and are known as "algos"
hence this type of trading is referred as Algo-trading (Algorithmic trading). Analgorithm is a specific set of
clearly defined instructions aimed to carry out a task or process. The
algorithm one company uses is not similar to the algorithm used by another
company hence the effective ones churns out the best returns/profits out of
their investments.
Algorithmic trading is a process that uses
computer programming which follow a defined set of instructions while placing a
trade in order to generate profits at a certain speed and certain frequency
that is impossible for a human trader. These defined set of rules are based on
timing, price, quantity or any mathematical model based on either simple or
complex strategy it involves as per requirements of a broking firm. Apart from
profit opportunities for the trader, algo-trading makes markets more liquid and
makes trading more systematic by ruling out emotional human impacts on trading
activities.Algorithmic
trading is widely used by investment banks, mutual funds, and other
institutional traders, to divide large trades into several smaller trades to
manage market impact and risk. Algorithmic trading is
appealing to buy-side firms because they can measure their trading results
against industry-standard benchmarks such as volume weighted average price
(VWAP) or the S&P 500 and Russell 3000 indices in US.
Algorithmic trading volumes are also
currently driven by sell-side proprietary traders and quantitative hedge funds
which thrive with a never ending quest to
please their high end customers in order to acquire great deals from them. Such
traders continuously work on ways and means to attract their customers with
their innovative and die-hard spirit. The first to innovate broker gets a
significant advantage over the others in such competition, in both ways of
capturing large orders and a reputation of being a innovative thought leader.
This scenario is possible only when best algorithm is put in place to enjoy a
significant time window ahead of the competition if that algorithm addresses a
really unique execution strategy.
HFT firms do not consume significant
amounts of capital, accumulate positions or hold their portfolios
overnight. These HFT firms make up low margins with incredibly high volumes of
trades usually in millions. As a result, HFT has greater and higher risk than
traditional buy-and-hold strategies have. A High-frequency trader usually competes
against other HFT, and not on long-term investors. Members of the financial
industry generally claim that high-frequency trading substantially improves
market liquidity, lowers volatility and makes trading and investing cheaper for
other market participants.
On the flip side, research body
argues that HFT and electronic trading pose new types of challenges to the
financial system and the trading discipline which is very much grounded in the
market since decades.Several European countries have proposals to ban HFT due
to concerns about volatility which is experienced sometimes with sharp spikes.
High-frequency trading has been the subject of intense public focus and debate
since the May 6, 2010 Flash Crash. Regulators claim that these practices only
contributed to volatility in the May 6, 2010 Flash Crash and found that risk
controls are much less rigorous for faster trades. Nobel Prize–winning
economist, Michael Spence, believes that HFT should be banned keeping healthy
trading and long term perspective in mind.
In India, the debate over the use of
HFT has resurfaced after the recent release of Michael Lewis' book Flash Boys, which is critical of the
system. The discussion within SEBI is that stock exchanges should implement its
guidelines which statethat there should be a two-queue system for orders coming
from co-location and other mode. Such architecture will provide orders
generated from a space not co-located. This way there is a fair chance of
execution and also addresses the concerns related to being crowded-out by
orders placed from co-location, a SEBI official said. Co-location is like
proximity hosting, where the exchange hosts the subscriber's server at its data
center i.e near the master trading engine and helps in faster movement of data
and execution of trades. Not all traders can use co-location as setting up the
infrastructure as it involves huge costs.
In India, both National Stock
Exchange (NSE) and the BSE do not follow any separate queue system currently.
If implemented, this two-queue system would ensure stockbrokers who are not
co-located to have a fair and equitable access to the stock exchange's trading
systems, said SEBI. The regulator had said distribution ratio of orders from
terminals/servers that are not co-located to the orders from co-located servers
may be kept at 1:1 and, in future, it may be reviewed based on the feedback
from market participants. As per the latest data on NSE, HFT constitutes 17.15
per cent of the overall trading volumes. HF proponents say "SEBI's suggestion
cannot be implemented as Co-location is mainly for time priority. It gives
liquidity to markets with high number of passive orders. If orders that come
first may not go first, then people will stop using it. Separate order queues
will close down co-location".Only time will tell the future and
implementation of Algo trading but without strict compliance and guidelines it
would be calling in for a financial disaster if
implemented in India.

Body_Lies!!!
Seeking your kind attention to the two words above,
what on this holy earth do they even mean?
What in the name of the various actions we all get into, is all this
body lies about?
Now, whatever you would read in the next few sentences,
I am sure, you would have experienced in some or the other time of your
life. Wait for it, keep on reading.
“You are such a wonderful student of mine! How
beautiful you look! What a perfect answer! Hey, I am just your friend okay!
Hahahahahahahahahahah! It is real pain when you don’t message me! You are the
best of all I had ever seen in my life! You are Awesome! You are beyond
comparisons! We are the best! Sweetest friend ever! Closest buddy! If you do
this, I will pay you this! Please do not try to compare me with anyone! It’s a
deal! Get out of my home!”
Yes, slowly, these dialogues, from somewhere, deep down
your sub conscious, suddenly sprouted into your now conscious, didn’t they?
This is what I would want to write today. The immense
amounts of emotions, feelings, ideas and ideologies we all go through at each
and every single given point of time and how these are indirectly not allowed
into the scene with body lies!!!
This is what I call it, with what I had seen in my past
23 years of my life. All those expressions, fewest of the few, in the third
paragraph are in some sense related to you. Someone would have told you the
same or in a bit better or a morbid way, makes no difference.
Can you actually identify any sentence which could have
been said with hidden intentions? Yes, I know you are counting hundreds of
them, already! Keep them all aside for a moment. Now think, could any of these
statements mean the same when someone said to you that way! Oh yes, you might
count few of them!
Lately, I had some shocking realizations about how
people can lie! Nerve impulses are so strong, god, I feel as if they really
carry some electric current in them to keep us tortured every single time with
these thoughts. We all tend to imagine, re clipping the whole conversation all
together, trying to observe how the other person was talking in the
interaction.
Selective perception and contrastive understanding,
human minds, we cannot do anything! Can’t we? When a person speaks, we try to
decipher him in the most modern way, better than anything you have known till
date!
When a person speaks up something, wait, still wait,
again wait, wait for a minute, and then possibly give them a comeback. This
doesn’t mean one has to sit looking like a dumbfounded creature before them. It
means, one has to try looking into the depth of the sentences that they pass on
into your brain cells. Decipher them using your codes, no problem. But, do not
fall prey to the body lies they create.
Their body sways, moves, flagellates, rocks, travels,
waves the way exactly you are about to understand it in. That is definitely
what they do not intend to tell. There is something hidden. There is something
you have to demystify.
Your Father, for example, might say “Get out of my
home” with an angry body gesture. Instead of just reacting, wait and try to
decode his body language. He is body
lying. His body lies have made you misunderstand his anguish. This is where we
are all failing.
Body lies is the new generation problem of many people.
Even we do this. Yeah, just think of one, woof, you got it. See, told you!
Sales, one of the most happening, ever continuing
phenomenon has to do something with body lies. You go to a guy, he has this
suit and tie, perfectly shaven chin, neatly pulled up hair, serious grin on his
face, well dressed, extremely well spoken. That could possibly be his first
day!
First days are always crucial; one has to decipher the
logics and codes used by the client or the customer. Getting into shoes is an
old phenomenon, you will have to get into his socks, you will have to become
his shoe horn, you will have to become his polish and you will have to become
his perfectly crafted, extremely comforting shoe sole. Getting into one’s shoes
is not just enough.
Salesman: Blah Blah blah (Routine Sales Pitch)
Him (client): Super, we will plan for it
Salesman: Wonderful sir! Will call you back after some
time.
Salesman: Hello sir! Shall we decide on terms and
conditions?
Him(client): No, We already gave it to some other
company
Salesman: Doomed!
You might have deciphered him wrongly when he said,
“Yes, let’s plan for it.” You might have taken his body lies for granted. You
might have acted according to his body lies. He was hiding his intentions in
his body language. Winner, towards the end would be him. Of course, you will
have to make him a winner, but not at the cost of you losing the game. Your
body lies and his should negate, and synergy is to be created. How? I am not
yet sure, I’m learning still.
This could happen with your parents, twins, elders,
friends and dear ones. Do not fall prey to the endless talk sessions, or the
body lies anybody would get you into. Disaster, it would lead you to.
But towards the end, I do understand that this is what
is completely my perception and might not be true in all cases. But watch out
for body lies people.
That was one simple example of what I could narrate to
you. I can already imagine you connecting the dots in many of your cases, with
different stakeholders in your lives. Please carry on!!!
Happy living !!!

THE_PATH_TO_SUCCESS
Success is a small word with a big meaning. This word decides how much respect we get from the society. One, who is not successful, is the one who has nobody to talk to. Some people say success means having a lot of money, while some say success means being an influential personality. But I say Success means doing what you love and loving what you do.Most of the people have less patience than the others, and that’s the reason they give up so easily. No diamond is found easily by just looking in the mine, we’ve got to find it...work hard on it. Suppose success is on Level 10, most of the people work hard till level 9 and they give up. They give up being so close to their goal. They don’t focus on their actual goal, they forget that where "focus goes, energy flows". For them, success means everything. It’s just that they don’t want to work hard.
Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and Robert Kiyosaki- all these people never sat on their sofa and played Video games thinking "No problem, I'll get a job somewhere easily". They knew their condition, they started their companies, worked hard 24x7, and now they are the most successful people.
Every student laughed at their innovative ideas back then, who’s laughing now?
98% Billionaires are self-made, in fact most of them started from nothing. They made a perfect plan. They worked hard.
They earned money. They invested it.
They earned it all back again and now they're Billionaires.
No matter if you fail once twice or thrice, but don’t lose hope. Hope is what pushes you towards the sky. If Bill Gates had lost the hope when he left the college, today he would be selling eatables on the roads but NO, he didn’t. He knew there is something within him which is trying to make him perfect. He found it. He heard the inner voice. He worked real hard.
Failure defeats losers, but inspires winners.
There are no regrets in life, just lessons.
Life is too short to spend it not pursuing you dream. Abraham Lincoln once said, "The best way to predict your future is to create it".
You cannot blame it on your parents, you cannot blame it on your friends, because all that has happened to you, is because of you.
If you don’t work hard, if you sleep 12 hours a day expecting some miracle would happen, buddy boy, you're done. Nothing is going to happen until you start it. Your hand is not going to move on its own, until you allow it. Work hard. Get successful.

Value_of_Friendship
For a person,
family proves to be an extraordinary backing in each part of life. In the event
that we look through the existence of a person, we can discover numerous
individuals who add value to life by backing them now and again. Among those
individuals who are included their life, "Friend" is the most
precious.
For a person, a
friend is the one who stays by his/her side constantly. It's not about
difficult times or typical life; we will have either on our side for that
specific issue. On the off chance that we are great and act decidedly for each
circumstance, there will be somebody or the other who will remain on our side.
Just keep one thing in mind- act naturally and individuals will be attracted to
you and will want to be your friend. For the most part everybody says that we
ought to be insightful in selecting a friend! I think about how we can
legitimize a person and choose to make specific individual as friend? In the
event that was a right proclamation, we won't have even one friend for our
lifetime since we will squander our time on breaking down individuals around us
and at last may wind up discovering none!
There is no
compelling reason to discover a friend in another spot! Simply act naturally.
It can help you to move to a specific gathering or if your method for living is
great, individuals will have a tendency to be with you. Up to this point it's
about being you, now we push forward intuition diversely to the present
situation around us:
In the present
society, if one can’t discover a person being with us like a friend for the
life time, he/she must not be disheartened. Every person has needs and needs
change from time to time. As time goes on we feel solace, even with the general
population around us during that period. We are in a society where people
usually approach a person only when we have any work with him/her. This
mentality keeps us on our guard for we fear that we also might be used and then
discarded.
Remember one
thing a friend is not a person who makes you learn some things in a good way. A
friend is a person who makes you learn numerous things badly.
·
Be
with a person where you can chuckle notwithstanding when are crying.
·
Be
with a person who teases you all the time by recognizing your shortcoming. This
is the way you can improve yourself.
·
Be
with individuals who listen to your words without getting exhausted .
Tune in, life is too short and there is
no confirmation that you will be alive for the following day. Carry on with
your life brightly where you can add appeal to yourself. Be with the people who
make you happy, avoid those who overlook you when times changed. Increase the
value of your life and the way you live by being unassuming. This is sufficient
to draw worthy individuals to you.
