MY_EXPERIENCES_IN_GEM
GITAM
Excellence Meet or GEM, as we call it has given me a good opportunity to
showcase what I have learnt until now and also taught me new things. I was
designated as the Head for Creativity department where I learnt to handle 150
people. I didn’t know that I could handle that many people until I took up the
position. GEM 2015 has opened up my mind on various occasions by proving me
wrong in the places where I thought I was right. Before GEM, I hardly knew
people from other departments. Even my seniors were strangers to me until I
took up the position.
During
the initial days, I faced problems from my own team of managers. Understanding
my team of managers and planning accordingly was my first step towards resolving
the problems that I faced. Allocation of resources, planning work and executing
it effectively, utilization of funds properly and maximum utilization of
resources are the other things that I have learnt by taking up this position.
Handling people has become easier day by day. One thing that constantly came up
while working was ‘planning’. If there was no pre-planning, the work was slow
and dull. Few days there was no work at all. After I started to plan things in
advance and started allocating work to students, the pace of work started
increasing rapidly. One of the good things that have happened to me with this
position is that I became popular among the students of GIM. My seniors
appreciated the work that I did. Faculty were happy to see the work getting
completed day by day. All this was possible because of team work. The team of
managers who worked with me was very supportive and helped me in lot of things.
Students from first year to final year have helped us in completing the work on
time.
Developing
a good relationship with colleagues and team mates is essential in any field.
With GEM, my interpersonal skills have developed to some extent. I am able to
communicate with new people comfortably and also I have learnt to get things
done by other people. In short, I have learnt to be a good leader by
communicating well and getting the work done on time. My leadership skills developed
during those 22 days. Overall, I had fun working with all the students and have
learnt a lot of new things also. My way of perceiving things has also changed
after GEM. I am thankful to each and every faculty who had faith in me and
appointed me as the Head of Creative Department.
