Introduction

GITAM Institute of Management takes great pride in organizing GITAM Excellence Meet (GEM), a very popular, annual national level youth fest, which offers an exceptional platform for youth to exhibit and hone their diverse talents.

The 17th GITAM Excellence Meet organized on 11th and 12th December, 2015, set a new benchmark in many ways. This carnival of fun and learning packed with myriad exciting and meaningful events was totally student-driven and student-centred. The theme for GEM 2015 was “Smarter than Smart” reflecting the concern and drive among the youth to help in the transformation of Visakhapatnam into a truly Smart City based on all-inclusive, all-round, sustainable and eco-friendly development. This year’s fest saw the participation of nearly 7000 students from schools and colleges across the country and over 18000 visitors went round the stalls.

A portion of the earnings from GEM 2015 is to be donated to the building of a Smart Village in one of the village communities that will be adopted for development by GITAM Institute of Management.

The event was inaugurated by Prof. G. Subrahmanyam, Vice Chancellor with Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna, Dean and Principal, presiding over the function. The valedictory address was delivered by Sri Murali Krishna Gannamani, MD & CEO, Phoenix IT Solutions, Visakhapatnam. Prof. D. Harinarayana, Pro Vice Chancellor graced the occasion and Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna, Dean and Principal, presided.

GEM Incorporation 2015:

The mega national level event, GEM 2015, was entirely organized and managed by the students of GITAM Institute of Management, who functioned as a corporate body by the name GEM Incorporation 2015. GEM Inc. 2015 had a student functioning as the Chief Executive Officer, supported by four students as functional heads, namely, Director of Finance, Director of Marketing, Director of Human Resources and Director of Operations. The chief aim behind the establishment of GEM Inc was to groom students to acquire business acumen like teamwork, teambuilding, dispute-resolution, organizing and leadership traits. The total dedication, selfless services and passion of students, faculty, supporting staff and the community at large, ensured that GEM 2015 became a unique platform to create exemplary youth leaders.

The Functional Organizational Structure adopted by GITAM Institute of Management has always been a prominent feature of every GEM and is a part of teaching through simulation

which proves to be beneficial for all the management students. This structure ensures the maximum participation of students, easier decision making and better coordination across departments. Given below is a diagrammatic representation of the Board of Directors and organizational structure of GEM Inc. 2015

Finance Department:

Finance Department lays the foundation for the mega event and the members of this team have the challenging task of raising funds from sponsors. They contact people, get sponsorship for the events and stalls and also coordinate with sponsors at the time of the event. We are proud to state that the Finance team in every GEM have set new benchmarks and shown a phenomenal increase in the collection of revenues.

Marketing Department:

Marketing Department carries out the crucial and massive exercise of promoting GEM across time and space, using every possible medium of communication. The Marketing team takes care of all the activities which involve promotion, positioning and branding of GEM. This department is responsible for entry passes. The team organizes flash mobs, rallies and many other activities and makes sure maximum number of people are aware of the event.

Human Resources (HR) Department:

Human Resources Department carries out the vital, behind the scenes, extremely sensitive task of providing necessary human resources, infrastructure, accommodation and transportation for all the other departments to function. The communications wing of this department takes care of the coverage and communication through media.

Operations Department:

Operations Department takes up the challenging lead role in the fest. In co-ordination with the other departments, it leads the execution of all the events in GEM.

The Fest and the Events:

Both Day One (11th Dec, 2015) and Day Two (12th Dec, 2015) saw a number of competitive management events followed by culturals in the evenings. The first day was for the Undergraduates while the second day was for the Intermediate and school students. Prior to the GEM fest, a flash mob, AIDS awareness rally and Helmet Rally were organized to sensitize the public about civic issues and to promote GEM. The two cultural nights on the two days of the fest saw the attendance of popular film stars, singers, music directors and other dignitaries from the world of business, industry, art and cinema. The cultural events were highly appreciated by the huge crowds. The food and other commercial stalls set up during these days also saw massive crowds.

CHRISTMAS_CELEBRATIONS

Christmas was celebrated in GITAM Institute of Management with great pomp on 21^st December, 2015. Large number of students and all the faculty members of GITAM Institute of Management actively participated. Ms. P.V.Siri of MBA (previous) gave a brief description about Christmas. At the outset, the Dean & Principal Professor K. Siva Rama Krishna extended his warm Christmas Greetings to one and all. Prof. P. Sheela, Vice-principal, GITAM Institute of Management gave Christmas message to the gathering. Mr. Leben Johnson, Associate Professor and Programme Co-ordinator MBA, gave a short message on Christmas and gave warm wishes to all the students and faculty members. Dr. Rositta Joseph, Assistant Professor, highlighted that Christmas is a festival of peace, love and joy where we connect with people. A lucky draw was also conducted to crown Mr. Christmas and Ms. Christmas. Mr. Raghuveer of MBA (previous) was tagged as Mr. Christmas and Ms. Suseela of MBA (Previous) was tagged as Miss Christmas by the Santa. Students sung the Christmas carols and also gave an energetic dance performance. The Vice principal along with the faculty members and Santa cut the cake and distributed it the gathering. Gifts were given to all by Santa. Vote of thanks was given by Ms. Shalini of MBA (previous). The programme was conducted by Ms. Kiran Yadav of MBA (previous).

PANEL_DISCUSSION_ON_‘PROMOTING_TRANSPARENCY_IN_SMART-CITIES’

On December 15^th 2015, a panel discussion was held on promoting transparency in Smart cities. It was jointly organised by GCNI and GITAM Institute of Management. The 10 smart cities where transparency is being promoted include- Bhubaneshwar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi and Vishakhapatnam.

The event was graced by renowned dignitaries from different walks of life Sri G.Sambasiva Rao Managing Director, Sravan Shipping Services Pvt. Ltd & Vice President AP Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Sri Winston S.K Adams, Secretary, Vizag Information Technology Association, Sri A.V. Monish Row, Vice President, The Vizagapatam Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Dr. Deepak Madala, President, THE- AP, Sri Sohan Hatangadi, Freelance Consultant, Sri. MuraliKrishna Gannamani, CEO & Managing Director, Phoenix IT Solutions Limited, Ms. Shabnam Siddiqui, Director, Center of Excellence,among others. UN GCNI is the largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiated in the world offering a unique platform to engage companies in responsible business behaviour through the 10 principles focusing on human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti corruption etc. It was formed in November 2003 and registered as NPO to function as the Indian Local Network of the UNGC. At present the India Network ranks among the top 3 out of the 102 local networks in the world, and has emerged as the largest corporate citizenship and social responsibility organisation.

The Collective Action project of the UNGC- SIEMENS INTEGRATED INITIATIVE aims to provide a platform for anti corruption dialogue between private and public sector and sensitize businesses towards ethical behaviour. The Center of Excellence develops pragmatic approaches around UNGC principle 10 and provides enabling platforms to business, policy makers, civil society, industry associates, UN agency and academia. It aims to improve organisational decision making through a stakeholder management framework that integrates transparency and integrity. It offers knowledge repository, research/surveys, deliberation/dialogue, need/risk assessment, expert panel, training/capacity, networking/collective action, compendium of positive anti corruption policies and practices, enabling environment/policy change and sustainability.

The Panel Discussion held at GITAM Institute of Management saw the following observations:

· The problem of implementing transparency in a country like India is corruption in the system.

· Without accountability, no work can be finished.

· A lot of research has to go into the project.

· It is people who can really bring the change by finding a solution which fits the problem.

· The key is empowering every citizen with knowledge.

· Enable everybody to understand how the government works to ensure the proper usage of money Adopt smart security, smart traffic. The System should be channelized properly in order to achieve transparency.

· The attitude and mindset has to be changed not only of the general public but also the government officials.

DEEPOTSAVA_CELEBRATIONS

Akshaya Patra the world’s largest NGO providing Mid Day Meal Programme to school children with the avowed objective that no child should be denied education due to hunger, organized a traditional Deepotsava, the festival of lights at GITAM University, in association with the Centre for Gandhian Studies, GITAM Institute of Management, GITAM University on 16^th December, 2015. The Deepotsava was graced by Akshaya Patra Visakhapatnam President Sri Niskinchana Bhakta Dasa, Prof. M. Potharaju, the Registrar, GITAM University, and the Dean and Principal, GITAM Institute of Management, Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna. Devotional musical rendition along with offering of Arti was performed by the students of GITAM University along with offering of the lamps, a ritual traditionally performed during the month of Karthika.

Seminar_on_Introduction_to_Vedanta

Vedanta Foundation and GITAM Institute of Management jointly organized a seminar on Introduction to Vedanta by Sushilaji (Disciple of Swami Parthasarathy) on 30^th November 2015.

Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna, Dean and Principal of GITAM Institute of Management addressed the gathering and observed that the Vedanta academy, Malavalli offers a great service to the world by giving free education on Vedanta. Prof.G.Subramanayam, Vice-chancellor of GITAM University, spoke about the Vedanta world of Swami Parthasarathy. He also emphasized the need to follow social values in the long journey between birth and death.

Sushilaji addressed the students of GITAM Institute of Management by defining the word Vedanta. She said that Vedanta is derived from two words, Veda knowledge and Anta end. Vedanta means the culmination of knowledge. It is the ancient Indian philosophy which answers the fundamental questions of life. Vedanta designs the pursuit of happiness through logical and systematic exposition of eternal truths. Founded on no individual, it is a system of knowledge discovered by pre-eminent seekers of Truth. The knowledge promotes material and spiritual well-being, combines dynamic action with mental peace and instils the higher values of service to provide prosperity and peace to the community. Above all, its philosophy leads one to the ultimate goal of Self-Realisation.

Sushilaji spoke about how to become independent of what we acquire in life and also how to acquire the world in a better way. She also said that Vedanta is a long term program in life dealing with specific cause for every moment in life. She highlighted few lines like “Never let your present happiness be your future acquisition”, “Be content with what you have at the moment” and “Always be peaceful to acquire better, as worry and anxiety brings agitation in life.” She narrated a poem “Olive tree” which indicated that one should always put in positive energy to achieve something and also narrated a poem “Even this shall pass away” which indicated that one should never lose oneself completely in an experience. Sushilaji concluded her lecture quoting, “ I complained that I have no shoes until I saw a man with no feet.”

There was an interactive session on “Original Self” and large number of students and faculty were enriched by the discourse. Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna, Dean and Principal of GITAM Institute of Management proposed the Vote of Thanks and felicitated Sushilaji.

Donation_of_E-Bricks_to_Amaravati-during_2nd_World_Congress_on_Disaster_Management

The Second World Congress on Disaster Management was held from November 19-22, 2015 in Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. It was jointly organised by Government of Andhra Pradesh and Disaster Management, Infrastructure and Control Society (DMICS). Hon. Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Shri N. Chandra Babu Naidu inaugurated this event which was also attended by Union Urban Development Minister Shri Venkaiah Naidu and Union Minister of State for Home and Disaster Management Shri Kiren Rijiju.

MBA first year Students of GITAM Institute of Management were privileged to attend this event. Prof. P. Sheela, Vice-Principal, handed over the brochure containing donation of E-Bricks by the students and staff of GITAM Institute of Management for building of the capital city of Amaravati to Hon. Chief Minister Shri N.Chandra Babu Naidu. A total of 1,50,000 bricks were donated by the students and faculty members of GITAM Institute of Management. Dr. B. Nalini, Assistant Director, Centre for Gandhian Studies handed over a report on Disaster Management to the Chief Minister. Mrs. K.V.Uma Devi, Associate Professor, GITAM Institute of Management also contributed towards this report. Students were given an opportunity to have a selfie with the Chief Minister.

Management_Principles_in_Buddhism_and_Experiences_of_Japanese_Corporates : Address by Ven. Shinsho Furukuwa

On 16^th November, 2015, MBA students had the privilege of listening to an eminent personality- Ven. Shinsho Furukawa, President, Japan-India Bodhi Society. At the outset, Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna, Dean and Principal, GITAM Institute of Management delivered the welcome address. Ven. Shinsho Furukawa spoke about management principles in Buddhism and his experience of Japanese corporate life. He spoke in Japanese and was translated in English by Naga Bodhi. He said that he always dreamt of being rich and so had started a business of Japanese garments. As Japan was developing after the Second World War, he could earn much but as he became more and more involved in preserving his high economic status, he failed to find the happiness which he had thought money would give. It was then that he was attracted by the Buddhist teachings. He learnt a lot from his early sufferings. Ven. Shinsho Furukawa opined that Lord Buddha always defined the meaning of human birth as being happy and making others happy. Lord Buddha taught that human beings should never escape from suffering because experience of suffering teaches us to find out ways of being happy. In this context Ven. Furukawa spoke about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar who was inspired by Buddhist principles and fought to eradicate discrimination from India. Speaking about Japanese and Indian values, he stressed the need to implement Buddhist principles in corporate life. He stressed that economy is important but proper management of economy is very important as money can both destroy and uplift. He said that discrimination based on self-seeking attitude is the major problem in India though the country is quite powerful. Large number of students of MBA participated and made the session very interactive. The session ended with a glimpse of the principles of Buddhism. GIM-ENACTUS Children’s Day Workshop

GIM – ENACTUS came forward with an innovative idea on the eve of Children’s Day. They drafted a plan to enhance skills and knowledge amongst underprivileged children. They decided to teach soft skills and use of technology to pupils of 9^th and 10^th standard of the Government District High School. ENACTUS team members began by giving a motivational speech to the students and faculty supported by motivational videos. They then organized a discussion on the role of technology in daily life, on what to learn and what not to learn from technology and clarified their doubts regarding technology and related issues. Later they conducted a session on soft skills. This was followed by a Power Point presentation on how to create email id in Gmail. Students were then divided into groups that worked under the supervision of ENACTUS team members as tutors. The following students of MBA first year participated in this noble initiative – Chetan, Hasitha, Vikas, Teja, Venkatesh, Narendra, Pranathi Bhagavathi, Bhavya, Rajendra, HemaLalitha, Durgaprasad, Ravi Kumar, Arun Kumar and ChennaKeshav.

Children’s-Day-Celebrations_NSS_UNIT–7

NSS Unit – 7 GITAM Institute of Management celebrated Children’s Day with school children of GVMC, Kancherlapalem, Visakhapatnam. NSS volunteers led by NSS Programme Officer Dr. Shaik Shamshuddin conducted motivational and leadership games for children and distributed prizes to winners. They explained the purpose of the games and how these helped in team-building and personality development. Refreshments were distributed to all the children of the school. The management of the school, NSS Programme Coordinator Prof. Swamy and the Dean and Principal Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna appreciated the NSS volunteers for their continued involvement in social causes.

Children’s Day Celebrations Adroit Minds Club

MBA first year students of Adroit Minds Club working under the guidance of Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna, Dean and Principal and Prof. P. Sheela, Vice Principal organised a noble social welfare initiative on the occasion of Children’s Day. They raised funds to organize an event at Hidden Sprouts School for mentally handicapped children located at Sector 12, MVP Colony, Visakhapatnam. As a part of this programme, students provided essential binding and sewing machinery to the school. Twenty five members of the club volunteered for this event and spent their time with around 100 children, spreading a lot of joy and cheer.

Diwali Celebrations

Students of GITAM Institute of Management celebrated Diwali with great pomp and show on 10^th November, 2015. Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna, Dean and Principal of GITAM Institute of Management addressed the gathering and extended Diwali greetings to students and faculty members. Many cultural events were conducted by the Culturals Club of GITAM Institute of Management. Rangoli competition, singing and dance competitions were held. Students participated with great enthusiasm. Priyanka (MBA 1^st year) and Vijay Bhaskar (MBA 1^st year) bagged 1^st prize in singing, Neela (MBA 1^st year) won 2^nd prize in singing and Kuljeet (MBA 1^st year) bagged 3^rd prize in singing. In the Rangoli competition, Archana and group (MBA 1^st year) won 1^st prize, Geetanjali and group (MBA 1^st year) bagged 2^nd prize and Evina and group (BBM 2^nd year) won the 3^rd prize.
